Tips by IIT professors to crack new JEE to get admission into IITs

In 2013 for admission to the undergraduate programmes of the IITs students have to give a two stage exam, JEE Main and JEE Advanced. JEE Main offline will be held on 7th April. CBSE will conduct JEE Main in both online and offline mode. JEE Advanced will be conducted on June 2, 2013, in offline mode.
JEE Advanced will be taken just by the top 1.5 lakh students (from all categories) of JEE (Main). So IIT aspirants will face a two-tier test – JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced). JEE (Advanced) 2013 will have two objective type papers, each of three-hour duration. Each paper will consist of questions from physics, chemistry and math. Question papers will be in both English and Hindi. Till 2012, an aspirant got the coveted IIT seat based on his All India Rank (AIR). But in 2013, apart from his AIR rank, a candidate needs to be in the top 20 percentile or scoring 75% whichever is minimum of the qualifying candidates of his Class 12 (other equivalent) boards to secure a seat in the IITs.
According to few IIT professors it’s right time for students to start their preparation. “It’s a two-stage exam. Students should not treat this as any other exam. Till now, students are used to writing the AIEEE. Paper I of JEE (Main) broadly seems to be on the AIEEE pattern. It’s very essential for candidates to get their basics right because only the top 1.5 lakh students will be allowed to write the JEE (Advanced),” says Tarun Kant, head, department of civil engineering, IIT Bombay.
According to Siddhartha Das, professor, department of metallurgical and materials engineering, IIT Kharagpur, “The best way to crack the new format is by preparing for the Class 12 exams seriously. If your fundamentals are in place and if you have studied for your board exams well, you will find it easier to crack it. Preparing for multiple choice questions also helps.”

JEE Main Marking Scheme

The maximum marks will be 360 for paper one and 460 for paper two. Each objective type question will carry 4 marks for correct response and each drawing question will carry the 70 marks for the correct response. Each objective type question will follow by the four options, of which only one will correct answer. The candidates will have to select the right one among the options. 25% of the allotted total marks to the question will be deducted for every incorrect answer. Where, there will not any response against any question in answer sheet, the marks will not be allotted or deducted. In case of two selections among the answers and if anyone will find as correct yet, it will be treated as the incorrect answer and will be punished with negative marking.

JEE Main 2015 Mode of Examination

The JEE Main examination is held in both Online or CBT (Computer Based Test) and offline (Pen and Paper Based) mode. Students shall have options to choose the appropriate mode accordingly for them while filling the JEE Main Application Form. If you will be interested to select the paper one then you would select either offline or online mode for paper one. If you will be interested to select the paper two then you would select only offline mode for paper two. If you will be interested in both paper 1 & 2 (engineering & architecture) then you will have two options. Either you would select for offline mode for both or you would select the online mode for paper one and offline mode for paper two.

PATTERN OF JEE Advanced

Students who qualify JEE-Mains can appear for JEE-Advanced examination. Approximately 150,000 students qualify to appear for JEE-Advanced examination. The All India Ranks (AIRs) for JEE Main 2014 have been declared.Students who obtain All India Ranks (AIRs) and wish to study Architecture or Design need to appear for an Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) and qualify.
1.19 lakh students appeared for JEE Advanced in 2014 out of which 27,152 qualified of which 14,269 i.e. 52.55% qualified from 11 Indian cities.

Pattern of JEE MAINS

JEE-Main Exam has two papers, Paper-1 and Paper-2. Candidates may opt for either or both of them. Both papers contain multiple choice questions.
  • Paper-1 is for admission in B.E./B.Tech (online and offline).
  • Paper-2 is for admission in B.Arch and B.Planning (offline only).
13.56 Lakh students including 316,000 female candidates appeared for JEE-Main exam in 2014.

 ABOUT JEE MAINS AND ADVANCE

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an all India common entrance examination which is conducted for admission in various engineering courses. In 2012, CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) has announced this common examination in place of AIEEE and IIT-JEE. JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) is being conducted into two parts, JEE-Main and JEE-Advanced. JEE-Advanced is for admission in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and Indian School of Mines Dhanbad (now getting converted into IIT) and JEE-Main exam is to admission in IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology), National Institutes of Technology, CFTIs (Central Funded Technical Institute) and IIEST Shibpur, for admission to its dual degree programme.
As IIT's and ISM are the premier engineering and science colleges in India, the candidates have to clear the second level of exam JEE-Advanced for securing admission in them. Only top candidates of JEE-Mains are eligible to appear for JEE-Advanced exam. The candidates who clear JEE-Advanced exam have the opportunity to join either of the IIT's or ISM. The candidates who clear JEE-Mains but are not eligible for JEE-Advanced can seek admission in other engineering colleges such as Indian Institute of Information Technology, National Institute of Technology, and other government and private engineering colleges.
There are some colleges like IISER's, RGIPT and others which uses score of JEE Advanced for admission. These are not participating institutes of Central IIT JEE Advanced counselling of which all IITs and ISM is a member. Any student who takes admission in IIT's and ISM Dhanbad (now getting converted into IIT) cannot appear for JEE-Advanced exam next year, but the same is not the case with IISER, RGIPT and other institutes as these institutes only use JEE Advanced score and they have no connection with IIT central counselling.
In September 2013, the IIT Council approved the decision of the Joint Admission Board to continue with the two-phase JEE pattern ("Main" followed by "Advanced") for IITs in 2014. The 2014 Joint Entrance Examination Results (JEE-Mains 2014) was announced on 3 May 2014. The JEE-Mains for 2015 was held on April 4, 2015.
Study materials for JEE mains and advance

For achieving absolutely anything in life, two things are of utmost importance: the knowledge of your destination and of the path that would lead you there. Knowledge of the path here includes choosing the best books for preparation.

I  have compiled an exhaustive list of IIT JEE preparation books which every aspirant should refer in order to have a good understanding of the subjects.

Being an IIT pass out  I know and have experienced what are the best books preparation.
You will find lots and lots of articles about what books you should buy.Even when i was starting my preparation for jee I had the same problem. The key is you should not buy all the books and just get confused what to read now. Basically all the books have approximately the same content.

These are the books I recommend that you should refer and practice to. These books are listed with a lot of research and my past experience. These are more than enough for your iit dream.
